Dr Mahmud Ahsan BSc (Civil), MSc (Hydraulics), PhD (Computational hydrodynamics), MIAHR

Director

Dr Mahmud Ahsan is the founding Director of Hydrotec & Engineering Consultants Limited. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1997. He then completed a Master's degree in 2001 at Hohai University, where he specialised in computational hydraulics, funded by government scholarships. His pioneering development of a new advection-diffusion model during his Master's research is well recognised in both national and international scientific communities.

Mahmud subsequently pursued his PhD at the University of Manchester, where he received a prestigious scholarship. His PhD research, completed in 2007, focused on computational hydrodynamics, particularly turbulence modelling in free-surface flows and porous-bed systems. He applied his research to both closed channel and open channel flows over permeable and impermeable beds, as well as in oscillatory flow scenarios.

His findings indicate that some conventional turbulence models used today do not accurately represent real hydraulic properties. Consequently, without a solid understanding of hydraulics and turbulence statistics, project engineers and modellers may overlook critical aspects, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes.

Dr Ahsan has extensive industrial experience in flood risk assessment (FRA), river and coastal modelling, drainage strategies, flood mitigation and alleviation, project appraisal studies, surface water management plans, flood mapping, flood forecasting, wave overtopping, hydrology, water quality modelling, morphodynamics, wastewater drainage in urban networks, and civil engineering design. He also provides assistance with the statutory review of other consultants' FRA and drainage strategy studies. Dr Ahsan has published and presented his research at peer-reviewed national and international conferences in various countries, including the UK, USA, France, China and Malaysia.

Dr Ahsan has been a member of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) since 2007 and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), UK, since 2005.
